The weather on the island of Madeira is characterized by warm and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. Generally speaking, from April to September rainfalls are poor while from October to March rains are abundant.
The warm flows of the Atlantic Ocean surround the island, influencing its climate and avoiding temperatures particularly high or low. On summer time a constant ventilation provides release from the heat of the sun, turning your beach days into a very pleasant experience. During winter time temperatures rarely drop below 17 degrees.
Due to the mountainous shape of Madeira, there are a number of micro climates on the island. The region of Funchal is always more sunny and dry compared to other areas. The northern and eastern regions of Madeira are colder and more rainy due to the winds blowing from north-east.
Summer is by far the best time of the year to visit the island; temperatures range between 20-25 degrees, rarely going beyond 30 degrees.
The weather becomes really warm when Leste wind blows from North Africa, bringing temperatures over 30°. Luckily it happens very rarely.
Thanks to its mild climate, Madeira is a great destination also on autumn. During this time of the year the island is less crowded with tourists and there are less families around. It is the best time for those who want to enjoy some pace and privacy, not to mention that accommodations are cheaper.
Until November temperatures go beyond 20 degrees, although it is more likely to have rainy days. During winter time temperatures rarely become to low. Madeira is a great destination to avoid the scary cold winter temperatures of continental Europe. Of course it won’t be possible to swim, but spending the day enjoying the sun and wearing light clothes doesn’t sound that bad either.
The hottest months of the year in Madeira are July, August and September, when the monthly average temperature reaches 25 °C, while the coldest months of December, January, February, March and April the thermometer drops up to 14 °C.
