Figueira da Foz ‘s name and nickname already reveal to you the main characteristics of this famous seaside resort in Portugal.
The official name translates as “fig tree at the mouth of the river” and alludes to the geographical location of the town, which is located at the mouth of the Mondego River. However, the town is known as Rainha das Praias, queen of beaches, and this already gives you an idea of why it is so popular in the summer.
Its urban beach, probably the widest in all of Europe, attracted visitors as early as the nineteenth century but tourism has totally changed since then. Once a fashionable resort favored by wealthy vacationers, today Figueira da Foz is a destination within everyone’s reach and suitable for different types of vacationers.
There are those who love it for the amount of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, those who choose it for its cheap prices or because it is easy to reach from Coimbra, Lisbon or Porto, those who find romantic its fin de siècle style and those who appreciate more the surrounding nature.
Although famous only as a seaside resort, the town of Figueira da Foz is not without interesting historical and cultural attractions.
Strolling through the old town you can admire elegant villas and palaces, traces of the glorious past when Figueira da Foz was a resort town for wealthy people. The two most famous are Palácio Sotto Mayr, a sumptuous neo-Renaissance palace built by a Portuguese businessman to show off his wealth, and Casa do Paço, which was built by the Bishop of Coimbra in the seventeenth century.
The latter will seem uninteresting from the outside, but the interior will make you stand open-mouthed for the wonder: you will be presented before your eyes a series of rooms entirely decorated with fine eighteenth-century Dutch tiles, produced in the city of Dweft and probably recovered from a shipwrecked in the area. The total number of tiles is really impressive: 6700!
A true emblem of the city is the Casino, the oldest of the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest. The modern glass facade may deceive you, but the beaux arts interior betrays the long history of this citadel of entertainment, still in operation today.
A visit is recommended even to those who do not like gambling: the stucco and the sumptuous decorations of the hall are worth seeing.
The Museo Municipal do Dr Santos Rocha is a little-known gem that lovers of art and history should not miss. Housed in a modern building, it exhibits a rich and eclectic collection that includes a little bit of everything, from prehistoric archaeological finds to arts and crafts from Portuguese colonies in Africa, India and Asia.
Another interesting local museum is the one dedicated to the production of salt, housed inside a small wooden house in the middle of the salt pans along the Mondego river.
The Fort of Santa Cater ina with its peculiar triangular shape is the only one preserved of the three fortresses built to defend the city from the attacks of pirates and foreign ships. You can walk along the walls and visit a small chapel built in 1598 where an image of Santa Caterina dating back to the eighteenth century is kept.
Just 6 km from Figueira da Foz stands an impressive castle that you can’t help but notice if you drive along the national road from Coimbra to Figueira da Foz.
Proudly perched atop a hill, the castle of Montemor-o-Velho was built in the 12th century and was an important bastion of Christian defense against the Moors’ advance during the Reconquista period.
Don’t be frightened by the castle’s ominous air: the interior is not at all gloomy and you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. The castle’s cafeteria-restaurant has become a popular meeting place for locals.
The other unmissable attraction around Figueira da Foz is the Serra de Boa Viagem, an impressive promontory covered with Mediterranean vegetation where you can take beautiful walks, admire spectacular views and have a picnic.
The main attraction of Figueira da Foz is Praia da Caridade, its beautiful city beach, an immense expanse of fine golden sand.
It is so wide that to reach the sea you have to walk a few minutes, but in August it becomes difficult to find a corner all for oneself so crowded. Behind the beach today stands a modern district full of bars, stores and hotels.
If the confusion is not for you move to Buarcos, a town further north reachable by local buses. The beach is less fascinating, but definitely quieter, frequented mostly only by passionate surfers.
For breathtaking views go further, passing the promontory of Cabo Mondego, and reach Praia de Quiaios or head south to Praia de Gala and Praia de Cadebelo.
The latter is divided into two distinct areas, one of which is protected from winds and currents: it is the best choice for those who love calm waters, a bit difficult to find along the Atlantic coast.
The hotel offer of Figueira da Foz is made up of a multitude of small pensions and family-run hotels housed in historic buildings, renovated with more or less care; there are also many hostels, some of which have private rooms.
If you want more comfort, there are a couple of modern three- or four-star hotels to choose from. If you don’t mind treating yourself to something special, book a luxury rural house with a sea view, just outside the town.
