Ponta Delgada airport (PDL) is the main access gate to the Azores.
Named after John Paul II and his visit of 1991 the airport is located on the western coast of the island of Sao Miguel, which is the largest island of the archipelago, located a little more than 2 kilometres west from the capital of the island. Not too far from the airport there are the villages of Arrifes, Faja de Baixo, Nordela, Relva, Rosta fare Cao and Vila Franca.
Its only terminal was built in 1995 and features bars, souvenir shops, a VIP longe, and various car rental companies.
The airport of Ponta Delgada operates international and intercontinental flights from and to Europe, United States, and Canada, as well as national flights from and to the islands of Azores, Madeira, and the Portuguese cities of Lisbon, Porto, and Farlo. Since April 2015 the airport of Sao Miguel is operated also by Ryanair.
