Among the beaches of southern Portugal Praia dos Salgados is definitely one of the most beautiful: a corner of the Algarve that will make you forget the stress of everyday life and give you moments of pure relaxation… or big bursts of adrenaline, if you prefer!
This stretch of golden sand along the coast of Albufeira stretches for miles and is bordered by striking sand dunes instead of steep cliffs like other beaches in the area. Another peculiarity of Praia dos Salgados is the lagoon that extends behind it and that extends up to the beach.
The picturesque lagoon landscape and the system of dunes, together with the total lack of buildings behind the beach, will make you feel far from the city and the chaos.
To reach Praia dos Salgados you will have to walk along wooden walkways created to protect the delicate ecosystem of the area: it is a pleasant walk, during which you may happen to spot flamingos and rare birds.
Despite its wild and remote appearance, this enchanting beach is easily reached from the nearest towns. It is an ideal choice for those who want a relaxing beach vacation, immersed in nature, but also for those who love active vacations.
Praia dos Salgados is a beach with a wild appearance but equipped with all essential services, so much so that it has been awarded the Blue Flag, the European recognition that rewards cleanliness and quality of services in the beaches.
In large part is not equipped, but there is an area where you can rent umbrellas and deck chairs. There is only one bar-restaurant near the beach, with a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, and a kiosk that sells snacks and drinks.
Unlike the other beaches in the area, Praia dos Salgados faces west, which makes it the ideal setting for postcard-perfect sunsets. Its length makes it perfect for relaxing walks by the sea.
There are many water sports you can practice: the most popular are surfing and bodyboarding. Nature lovers can go birdwatching to admire the many species that live in the lagoon in front of the beach, including many migratory birds and some species in danger of extinction.
Near the beaches there is a golf course.
Every year in March Praia dos Salgados turns into an open-air museum that exhibits very special works… all made with sand.
At theInternational Sand Art Festival of Praia dos Salgados participate each year about fifty local and international artists who create elaborate sand sculptures inspired by a theme each time different. The tallest ones reach almost four meters!
The sculptures generally last until October, so you can see them completed even if you travel outside of the festival dates.
Praia dos Salgados is a remote beach, far from the population centers. Around the beach have sprung up hotels, resorts and vacation apartments mostly of medium-high range; the choices in the economic price range are more limited but booking in time you can find something.
The nearest village is Armação de Pera, about 6 km from the beach. Here you will find a good choice of hotels, residences and apartments in the mid-price range plus some hostels and budget hotels for those traveling low cost and some 4-5 star hotels for those who instead want a luxury accommodation.
The advantage of staying near the beach is that you will not need a car to reach it, but if you choose to sleep in Armação de Pera you will have more stores and services.
Praia dos Salgados is located in the Albufeira area in Algarve, the southern tip of Portugal. The nearest international airport is Faro: it is connected to Europe by direct flights of low cost companies, but they are infrequent and almost always seasonal.
Another possibility for those who want to get to Praia dos Salgados is to take a flight to Lisbon and then reach it with a rental car (calculate a little more than two hours). The car is strongly recommended to move in the Algarve because some of the most beautiful places are not accessible by public transport.
The beach has a large parking lot, near the golf club. From there you will have to walk a bit along a sidewalk and then once you reach the sand on wooden walkways. You can walk to Praia dos Salgados from other beaches in the area.
